Promises Treatment Centers released a new iPhone app this week, the iPromises Recovery Companion. The app is offered for free in the iTunes store. The iPromises Recovery Companion offers a powerful tool to help build one of the most important elements of addiction recovery: a community of like-minded peers who understand the joys and challenges of recovery. iPromises allows you to easily contact your sponsor and friends in recovery, keep a calendar of meetings and service, get a daily positive message, and track your accomplishments, challenges, moods, and triggers.
“For over 20 years Promises has offered our clients a bridge to recovery. Based on our tradition of giving back to the community, we created this free recovery tool to help our clients and anyone else in recovery create a virtual system of support,” says Dr. David Sack, CEO of Promises Treatment Centers and Elements Behavioral Health.
One of the great features of the iPromises Recovery Companion is the ability to use the iPhone’s built-in geo-positioning to automatically store the address when you are sitting in a meeting. Once you have stored the meeting, you can opt to share it with anyone in your geographical area or with anyone who knows your e-mail address or username.
iPromises also offers a great solution for anyone traveling in the United States, Canada, and a growing international list of countries. The travel section allows you to click a “near me” button and bring up a list of local AA interoffices to find the closest meeting. You can easily dial the office from the list.
“One problem we saw with other recovery apps was that meeting information was often inaccurate. Someone would be visiting another city and not be able to find a meeting within 20 miles. This app allows you to easily dial the closest AA interoffice and get accurate, current meeting information,” explains Vera Appleyard, VP of Internet Marketing.
The recovery app will be a valuable tool for those in early recovery. When they return home they can find shared meetings in their local area, get alerted to call their sponsor if they pick a trigger in their visual journal, and build a list of supportive peers in their contact list. They can use the progress graphs to monitor their moods, attitudes, and behavior over time.
“If someone sees the angry bar rising day after day, they know this is an issue they need to address,” says Dr. Shari Corbitt, Senior Executive Director of Promises Treatment Centers, “I highly recommend that anyone in recovery try the iPromises Recovery Companion. It helps you formalize your recovery and recognize that it is a daily process.”

Lindsay Lohan is back in the news after she failed to report to a mandatory court hearing in Los Angeles, which resulted in a warrant for her arrest. Judge Marsha Revel of Los Angeles County Superior Court also revoked Lohan’s probation, which she was given after two arrested in 2007 on drunk-driving charges. The judge stipulated that if she makes bail, she will be prohibited from drinking alcohol, required to wear an alcohol-monitoring bracelet, and undergo weekly drug testing.

Promises Treatment Centers has achieved a three-year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an independent, nonprofit accreditor of human service providers in such fields as behavior health care. CARF accreditation demonstrates Promises’ dedication to superior performance for their clients.
Promises Treatment Centers has passed the rigorous standards of The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and become accredited by CARF for a period of three years. From the CARF website:
“Accreditation is a good sign that an organization cares about delivering quality services to its customers. This week David Sack, M.D., CEO of Promises Treatment Centers, and Dr. Shari Corbitt, Senior Executive Director of Promises, were sought for their expertise by a number of media outlets. Because Promises has been treating addiction for more than 20 years, reporters often seek comment on stories related to addiction, compulsive behavior, and treatment.
On Monday, Dr. Sack appeared on ABC Evening News with Diane Sawyer to discuss setting financial limits with children who are using drugs. On Friday he appeared on Fox 11 News in Los Angeles to discuss sexual addiction. Many media outlets were covering the public apology by Tiger Woods so there was significant coverage related to the issue of sexual compulsivity. Earlier this week, Dr. Sack was interviewed by Time Magazine for an article on doctors who over-prescribe prescription medications to celebrities.
On Friday, Dr. Corbitt appears on KTLA, also to discuss sexual addiction.
The Los Angeles times quote Dr. Sack in the Friday edition: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-tiger-woods20-2010feb20,0,1214109.story
As a dual-diagnosis treatment center, Promises has expertise in the treatment of sexual addiction.
In the Tuesday, February 16th edition of Time Magazine David Sack, M.D., CEO of Promises Treatment Centers was interviewed by Time Magazine for an article on how doctors enable celebrity drug addiction.
Sack points out an often fatal misconception. “What I would hope, first of all,” he says, “is that people would realize that just because a drug is prescribed doesn’t mean it’s safe. It’s only safe in a context, and once you change that context and you start to mix it with other pills and alcohol, it’s not going to be safe. The public needs education, and I think physicians, when they realize the risks, are much less likely to be pressured into prescribing them when they’re inappropriate or, more importantly, prescribing things without adequate supervision.”
On Sunday, February 21, 2010, Promises Treatment Centers will offer a recovery workshop at it’s outpatient center in West Los Angeles. Our facilitators will guide participants through accessing their own intuition, learn Native American spiritual principles, and enhance their creativity through experiential learning.

“There was a belief that 30 days was the right number,” David Sack, CEO of Promises, told the Times. “But there was absolutely no data to say 30 days was the right number. … What we’re seeing now is this much broader view for how to manage addiction. There isn’t this naive optimism that people will reach 30 days and they’ll be fine.” -David Sack, M.D., CEO of Promises Treatment Centers
