Promises’ Dr. Donna Markus to Speak on Attachment Organization and Addiction at BFI Summit in Savannah, Georgia

Los Angeles (PR Web) March 4, 2010 – Dr. Donna Markus, Executive Director of Promises Treatment Centers in Malibu, will be speaking at the BFI Conference Friday, March 5 in Savannah, Georgia, on the influence of attachment organization on addiction and recovery. Dr. Markus did her doctoral thesis on the topic of attachment theory.

While working in the addiction treatment field, Dr. Markus recognized the challenge of getting clients to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships, and she wanted to better understand these obstacles. She began researching attachment theory and its implications with addiction about a decade ago, and found that it is extremely helpful in understanding how an individual’s early attachment experiences may influence his or her personality development and psychological well being.

Dr. David Sack and Dr. Shari Corbitt of Promises in the Media

This week David Sack, M.D., CEO of Promises Treatment Centers, and Dr. Shari Corbitt, Senior Executive Director of Promises, were sought for their expertise by a number of media outlets. Because Promises has been treating addiction for more than 20 years, reporters often seek comment on stories related to addiction, compulsive behavior, and treatment.

On Monday, Dr. Sack appeared on ABC Evening News with Diane Sawyer to discuss setting financial limits with children who are using drugs. On Friday he appeared on Fox 11 News in Los Angeles to discuss sexual addiction. Many media outlets were covering the public apology by Tiger Woods so there was significant coverage related to the issue of sexual compulsivity.  Earlier this week, Dr. Sack was interviewed by Time Magazine for an article on doctors who over-prescribe prescription medications to celebrities.

On Friday, Dr. Corbitt appears on KTLA, also to discuss sexual addiction.

The Los Angeles times quote Dr. Sack in the Friday edition: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-tiger-woods20-2010feb20,0,1214109.story

As a dual-diagnosis treatment center, Promises has expertise in the treatment of sexual addiction.

Dr. David Sack Interviewed by Time Magazine

In the Tuesday, February 16th edition of Time Magazine David Sack, M.D., CEO of Promises Treatment Centers was interviewed by Time Magazine for an article on how doctors enable celebrity drug addiction.

Michael Jackson’s Health: Why Do Doctors Coddle Celebrities?

Sack points out an often fatal misconception. “What I would hope, first of all,” he says, “is that people would realize that just because a drug is prescribed doesn’t mean it’s safe. It’s only safe in a context, and once you change that context and you start to mix it with other pills and alcohol, it’s not going to be safe. The public needs education, and I think physicians, when they realize the risks, are much less likely to be pressured into prescribing them when they’re inappropriate or, more importantly, prescribing things without adequate supervision.”
